AbstractPURPOSE:

Withanewlydescribeddiagnosticpathway,weaimtoavoidunnecessarysurgicalexplorationforsuspectedsymptomaticgroinherniasinpregnancy.

METHODS:

Aconsecutiveseriesofeighteenpregnantwomenwasreferredtoourdepartmentduetoagradualonsetofinguinalswellingandgroinache.Inaprospectiveclinicalstudy,weevaluatedthesepatientsclinicallyandemployedgrey-scaleandcolourDopplersonography(CDS)inallcases--followinganewlydescribedpathway.Allpatientswereexaminedpre-andpost-partumbytwoqualifiedsurgeons.Medianfollow-uptimewas11months.

RESULTS:

4/18ofthesuspectedherniasfirstoccurredtowardstheendofthefirst,themajority(12/18)inthesecond,2/18inthelasttrimesterandallweresuspectedafterclinicalexaminationonly.Mostwomenwerereferredbytheirgynaecologists.WefoundnoherniasinanyofthewomenbutalwaysnotedlargevaricoseveinsalongtheroundligamentduringCDS.Allwomengaveun
